You should start off with something simple. Satchel bags come in many styles, but keeping it simple would suit a student better so you do not call too much attention to yourself. Having simple-looking ones would also allow you more space for creativity to decorate the bag.
Having an active role in school may mean that there would be greater chances for your bag to get dirty. Especially with light colors like white, yellow, baby pink, or baby blue, stains can become very apparent on them. Having bags with darker colors like brown and grey can help camouflage stains easily, which allows you to concentrate on your activities instead of how dirty your bag is. You should also choose one that is durable, like those made out of leather, for your active lifestyle and carry the weight of your books.
Size is an important thing to consider. You should roughly know how much books and other items you carry daily, so get a bag big enough for them. But do not put too many books into the bag or it may tear easily, and put much pressure on your shoulders and back. However, in unavoidable situations where you have to carry more books that usual, it would be good to have extra support from the bag. Bags with wide-set straps will help balance the weight as compared to narrow ones that will concentrate the pressure onto the shoulders.
You should also check the bag for compartments. Being a student, you will need to carry books, stationeries, and other miscellaneous items like your mp3 player or your keys. Having proper compartments for them will allow you to reach for the items easily, as well as preserving the condition of the items. Do also make sure that the zippers close and open properly or you may have end up being rough with the bag. Overall, you should make sure that it is comfortable to carry and use the bag.
